Where to Start! A Poetry Guide for Beginners

This is the list I would have wanted when I started reading poetry. It has a bit of everything and will get your mind right.

This is a list of good poems for anyone starting their journey into poetry. The following poems share some combination of fun reads, intriguing ideas, or examples of literary devices done well.

I would recommend reading and thinking critically about at least one poem a day. Read it multiple times and read it out loud. Give poetry a chance because like everything else in life it takes practice and time to develop. Here is a solid 30 poem start.

  1. How did I miss this?! I was just scrolling through the blog and found your profile page again and this. SO GREAT!!!! I literally just added Caelica 83 as Paul Kalanithi had referenced it in "When Breath Becomes Air". I would love to go through these poems starting next month one day at a time on top of normal posting. I am so impressed***************
