10 May: "The Dawn’s Awake!" by Otto Leland Bohanan

The Dawn’s Awake!
Otto Leland Bohanan
THE DAWN’S awake!
A flash of smoldering flame and fire
Ignites the East. Then, higher, higher,
O’er all the sky so gray, forlorn,
The torch of gold is borne.        5
The Dawn’s awake!
The dawn of a thousand dreams and thrills.
And music singing in the hills
  A pæan of eternal spring
  Voices the new awakening.        10
The Dawn’s awake!
  Whispers of pent-up harmonies,
With the mingled fragrance of the trees;
    Faint snatches of half-forgotten song—
  Fathers! torn and numb,—        15
The boon of light we craved, awaited long,
  Has come, has come!

  1. A fresh start! The first two stanzas are great images. Too bad we didn't read this one with the dreams poems.

Mr. Otto Leland Bohanan captures the struggles and hopes of a new beginning very well. I wonder if he saw fathers struggling more, or if that was more of a product of the time period where fathers were supposed to be the bread makers.

    1. The imagery almost paints through the mind as it arises from the poem! It is so different how this image of dawn moves up through the poem and inspiration...a true new beginning of the day versus the opposite setting of a sun and closure. This reminds me of the sun salutation sequence in yoga. It is said to awaken the "sun" and give reverence to this exact imagery...the sun, or friend, who brings forth life, gives warmth and radiance and inspiration and fire...if you practice this at the beginning of the day it turns into sort of a prayer- a prayer for thankfulness...from the original "source" of life as we know. The literal and spiritual SUN.
