I Had no time to hate
XXII.
I had no time to hate, because
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity.
The grave would hinder me,
And life was not so ample I
Could finish enmity.
Nor had I time to love; but since
Some industry must be,
The little toil of love, I thought,
Was large enough for me.
Some industry must be,
The little toil of love, I thought,
Was large enough for me.
Upon the thousands of choices we make each day, it is our mind that most determines our happiness. Going back to the paradise lost poem, we can choose to make our circumstance heaven or hell and we can often recreate those exact circumstances if necessary. I love how she brushes off the stanza of hate, but clings to the "toil of love" in stanza 2. Just the thought, the might, the hope was good enough...it really is.
ReplyDeleteDickinson is excellent at sparking up conversations. Using mostly simple language but driving home deeper ideas for exploration.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if she had no time for hate nor love, what did she have time for? She must have been a teacher! Haha
