20 Aug: "I, Too" by Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

I, too, am America.

    I know with the Charleston riot, people might say that we still have a long way to go. I'd agree with that, but in comparison to Hughes' experience we have gotten a lot closer. I know most people are ashamed. And in my lifetime, I can see attitudes about the beauty of black people improving. Hopefully tomorrow is only another generation away, and we don't become more divided by current events
