Paradox
I went out to the woods to-day
To hide away from you,
From you a thousand miles away—
But you came, too.
And yet the old dull thought would stay,
And all my heart benumb—
If you were but a mile away
You would not come.
-Jessie B. Rittenhouse
Is the "you" in the poem an idea? Maybe sorrow or anxiety. You can run away, but your problems will follow you.
ReplyDeleteI always assume a lover first...but you're right- who is "you"? The personification is fun. And if you is not a lover, I like the last two lines- if we can just create enough space between this and that then maybe we would be able to find the proper balance to have the cake and eat it too.
ReplyDeleteOnce I started to understand that the journey of Love seems to be one humongous relationship and not just the one you end up in in the end it really helped to not view and feel emotions this way. We become the love we have experienced...even the pain...but if we can learn how to let it pass through the body and just notice it (like meditation!) then the frame that is left is how we have learned to Love the love that creates us. A both passive and active idea.
