What is a sonnet? It is a poem mostly following these three criteria:
- 14 lines
- iambic pentameter
- rhyme scheme:
- Petrarchan: ABBA ABBA CDECDE or ABBA ABBA CDCDCD
- Shakespearean: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
I copied the above criteria from The Poetry Foundation's article "Learning the Sonnet" by Rachel Richardson. Read Learning the Sonnet for more details on the sonnet's history and form.
I wanted to find modern, 21st century, or even 2020 sonnets. Instead, I found Shakespeare. It might be a lot easier to stick with Shakespeare.Want Professor X to read Shakespeare's Sonnets to you? Perfect, click here.
Idea for October: I want to read the same poem everyday for the month of October. Any ideas?
